Central Sardinia 路 Barbagia 路 Gennargentu

Staying in Tonara, in the heart of Sardinia

Tonara is a mountain village in central Sardinia, in the province of Nuoro, known for handmade torrone, cowbells, woodwork, nature and the slow pace of the Barbagia villages. Choosing to stay in Tonara means experiencing a side of Sardinia that's different from the coast: quieter, cooler, and closely tied to the seasons and traditions.

Sorelle Carboni was born right here, on via del Belvedere, as a guesthouse and holiday home for those looking for well-kept rooms, warm hospitality and a comfortable base to explore Tonara and the surrounding area. It's a good fit for couples, families, small groups and travellers who want to take their time discovering central Sardinia.

If you're planning a stay, you can browse our rooms and apartments or send an availability request.

What to see in Tonara

Tonara is a village best explored on foot, taking the time to notice the details: the stone houses, the views towards the mountains, the craft workshops and the scent of torrone. The town keeps the atmosphere of the Barbagia villages, with a strong local identity and a tradition of hospitality that's simple, direct and genuine.

Among the things to see in Tonara are the historic quarters, the churches, the scenic viewpoints and the places tied to local craftsmanship. The village is also known for cowbell-making, woodwork and a material culture that's still very much part of everyday life.

Torrone and craftsmanship

Tonara is one of the homes of Sardinian torrone. Visiting the village means discovering a confectionery tradition built on honey, almonds, hazelnuts and methods passed down over generations. Alongside torrone, local craftsmanship tells the story of a deep bond with the mountains, the animals, the woods and the tools of pastoral life.

Events and traditions

Throughout the year, Tonara hosts festivals, cultural events and moments tied to local traditions. Travellers visiting in autumn will find an especially lively atmosphere, as the villages of Barbagia open their doors to visitors with courtyard events, local food and community stories.

Tonara and the surrounding area

Tonara's location is ideal for exploring central Sardinia. From here you can reach other Barbagia villages, mountain landscapes, nature trails and areas near the Gennargentu massif. It's a perfect area for anyone who loves walking, taking photos, discovering small villages, and stopping to talk with the people who live here every day.

The mountain climate makes Tonara pleasant even in the warmer months, especially if you want to combine the coast with the inland areas, or build an itinerary away from the busier routes. In the evening, after a day among nature and villages, coming back to a quiet room becomes part of the experience.
